Is The Internet Under Attack?

NEW LEGISLATION CITED AS ASSAULT ON FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Legislation under consideration in Congress is being criticized by major Internet service providers to the extent that some have suggested cites such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter may shut down to protest the new laws contained in a bill called "SOPA" (Stop Online Piracy Act.)

According to CNN, the legislation is "intended to help put a stop to foreign websites that illegally post, and sometimes sell, intellectual property from the United States. Federal law-enforcement agencies would be empowered to shut down those sites and cut off advertising and online payments to them."

The issue at dispute is whether this gives the federal government too much power over the Internet, and some of the Internet heavyweights claim that these bills are merely a way for Hollywood and others to get legislative protective status.
